‘Never accept a private apology after public disrespect’ — Dele Odule

‘Never accept a private apology after public disrespect’ — Dele Odule

Veteran Nollywood actor Dele Odule has advised people against accepting private apologies when they have been publicly disrespected or embarrassed.

The actor argued that situations involving public disrespect should not be resolved behind closed doors, stressing that accountability should take place in the same public space where the offence occurred.

According to Odule, accepting a private apology for a public embarrassment may leave the original harm unaddressed and fail to restore the respect that was lost.

He maintained that public disrespect requires public accountability, particularly when the incident has been witnessed by other people.

Odule also suggested that a private apology could sometimes be more about easing the offender’s personal guilt than genuinely addressing the consequences of their actions.

He advised that anyone who has been publicly disrespected should ensure that the matter is properly addressed rather than accepting a private resolution that leaves the public perception unchanged.

The actor stressed that respect should be restored in the same setting where it was damaged.

He further noted that accountability is important in resolving conflicts, especially when an individual’s reputation or dignity has been affected in front of others.

Odule’s remarks have sparked conversations about whether private apologies are sufficient when an offence or disagreement occurs publicly.

He maintained that genuine resolution should involve accountability and restoration of respect, rather than simply moving the matter behind closed doors.
